The iCRAG SFI Research Centre for applied geosciences, hosted by University College Dublin (UCD) has had its short film “Inception Horizon” selected as a finalist in the Earth Futures Film festival’s Geoscience Professional category. The festival connects geoscience and the arts raising international awareness of the role Earth Science plays in building our sustainable future.

On September 17th, iCRAG will be taking part in a special event in the Zupanova jama cave in Slovenia, where the Mellow Tonics choir from Dublin will travel to perform Inception Horizon live in the underground showcave setting.

About Inception Horizon:

Inspired by adventures at the Devil’s Punchbowl, Kinvara and deep inside Sliabh Elva, and guided by the insightful scientific explanations of Dr. Laurence Gill, “Inception Horizon” follows the path of atmospheric water above the lowlands of County Clare, through the soil and into the layers of rock that lie beneath. It seeps, drips and then gains traction, creating and passing through various pathways with its laminar and then increasingly turbulent flow. Over time it carves out a vast cave before finding its way back to the air via a spring.

The concept of an inception horizon features strongly in the music of the work - this is the crucial point that facilitates the initial passage of water and then stretches out like a constant ceiling above further descending erosion. Whispers of the corrosive forces at work echo in the space against an overall trajectory of descent, until the final upwards rush when you can breathe again.

About the Mellow Tonics Choir:

Mellow Tonics is a mixed voice choir formed in Dublin in 2015 who meet every Tuesday night to sing. The choir’s repertoire stretches the divide of popular contemporary music to classical contemporary with a particular focus on Irish composed works. With a special interest in collaborations with other art forms and have engaged with dancers, architects, visual artists and comedians, as well as musicians, in artistic and social projects, the Mellow Tonics are led by composer Norah Constance Walsh.
